24th April, 2009 marked the 50th day of the theatrical release of the Zack Snyder’s Watchmen movie. Like every film produced under the Warner Bros banner, Watchmen too had high expectations riding on its shoulders. The stakes riding on the Watchmen were very high as it was suggested that it took a whooping $120 million to bring the film to screen before a single ticket sale. Warner Bros made a big gamble, and ultimately the film was released under their banner. The collection made by Watchmen during the opening weekend was unexpected, especially for those who were expecting less return from it. Those who wanted to download Watchmen were also pleased to find it available online during the same time as the theatrical release.
The comic book adaptation made $55 million of revenue during its opening weekend. Based on the collection that Watchmen made during the opening weekend, the film was considered as a box-office hit. But soon the flick began to lose its glory and did not fare well during the following weekends. There could be many reasons for dwindling interest after the initial spurt. Fans who would have seen the movie in theaters multiple times before, often now download movies from various movie sites or due to the new online movies easily available to them. Movie downloads are very easily to do now and saves quite a lot of money for movie lovers.
Seven weeks after its release, Watchmen’s legs, it seems have crumbled under the pressure and tallies have estimated it will peter out at $150 million, the film is not even expected to earn back the invested amount. But still all is not lost for Warner Bros, as they have their hopes still pinned on the “Blu-ray” and “DVD” markets, from where Warner Bros is expecting the film to recover.
